Conjoined Lateral Bands Anatomy
Description
- The lateral bands are the distal extension of the tendons of the intrinsic muscles which include the dorsal interossei, palmar interossei and lumbrical muscles.
- The interossei are part of the conjoined lateral band on the radial and ulnar side of the finger.
- The lumbrical are only part of the radial conjoined lateral band.
- The interossei are part of the conjoined lateral band on the radial and ulnar side of the finger.
- These tendinous extensions pass below the axis of motion of the MP joints and dorsal to to axis of motion of the PIP and DIP joints.

Key Points
- The lateral bands flex the MP joints and extend the PIP and DIP joints.
- Approximately 50% of grip strength originates from the intrinsic muscles.
