Lateral Slip Anatomy

Description:

  • The lateral slips are parts of the dorsal extensor mechanism at the PIP joint.
  • These tendon slips pass from the radial and ulnar side of the extensor digitorum communis to the the radial and ulnar conjoined lateral bands at the PIP joint.
  • By attaching to the lateral bands, the lateral slips contribute extension forces to the terminal extensor tendon which extends the DIP joint.

Key Points
  • The lateral slips reinforce the extensor hood of the PIP joint and help keep the lateral bands dorsal to the axis of motion at the PIP joint.
