Lateral Slip Exam
- The lateral slips are small tendinous components of the extensor mechanism at the PIP joint.
- The lateral slips are too small to exam as isolated structures but are part of the interrelated PIP and DIP extensor mechanism.
- At surgery the lateral slips maybe visible with magnification as part of the extensor mechanism at the dorsal PIP joint.

Key Points
- The lateral slips are important because they transfer extension forces from the EDC to the terminal extensor tendon of the finger.
- The lateral slips also actively support the positioning of the conjoined lateral bands dorsal to the PIP joint axis of motion.
