Dorsal Thumb Artery Exam

While the deep or dorsal radial artery can be palpated in the dorsal first web between the base of the index and thumb metacarpal bones, the small arterial branches to the dorsal thumb can not be seen or palpated reliably on physical exam of this area. These small vessels maybe detected with a doppler examination.
