Posterior Division of Anterior Interosseous Artery and Posterior Interosseous Artery Anatomy

  • The posterior Interosseous artery and the posterior division of anterior Interosseous artery are not visible on physical exam and can not be palpated.
  • The anatomy of these small arteries is variable; therefore, Doppler and/or computed tomographic angiogram to check their presence and location when planning to use these vessels in reconstructive procedures.
Diagrams & Photos
  • In the dorsal forearm there are two main arteries; the posterior Interosseous artery and the posterior branch of anterior Interosseous artery.

Key Points
  • The posterior Interosseous artery and the posterior division of anterior Interosseous artery can be used to for blood supply for pedicle and free flaps that are used for reconstructive procedures in the wrist and hand.
  • The 2,3 intercompartmental supraretinacular artery which is a branch of the radial artery is also used for vascularized bone grafting.
