Palmar Cutaneous Branch of the Median Nerve

  • The palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve is a sensory branch of the median nerve.
  • Branches of radial side of median nerve 6 - 7 cm proximal to wrist crease.
  • The palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve is dorsal to the volar forearm fascia in Section 9 and goes into the subcutaneous tissues of the thenar eminence at the wrist crease.
  • In Section 9 the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve is located between the palmaris longus and the flexor carpi radialis tendons.

Key Points
  • The palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve can arise ulnarly from the median nerve.
  • The palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve can sometimes be located superficial to or radial to flexor carpi radialis tendon.
  • In the subcutaneous tissue the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve can have 1-3 branches.
  • In a small percentage of cases, the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve communicates with the dorsal sensory radial nerve.
